Richmond Fontaine

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Those that know me know that I have a special place in my heart for alt-country/new Americana. I recently discovered the band Richmond Fontaine because they have been on a few best of lists, including Greg Dulli’s from the the Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers fame. Anyway, put them on the list of bands I want to see when they come through town again. Posting “You Can Move Back Here” but be sure to check out “Making it Back” Enjoy:

Top 20 Albums of 2009 (Because 10 is too hard)

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

My limbic system took in the sounds of 2009 and sent me into some distant world. Passing the sounds to my cerebellum as I danced the year away. Now I am back with my most “nerdy” excel sheet, straight from the cerebrum, giving my take on The Top 20 Albums of 2009.

Enjoy!

(just in case you have no clue what I am talking about find my top albums from 2000 – 2005, my intro will explain how “nerdy” this process is)

1.  The Pains of Being Young at Heart:  The Pains of Being Young at Heart

2.  The XX:  XX

3.  Lookbook:  Wild at Heart

4.  …and You Will Know us by the Trail of the Dead:  Century Self

5.  Girls:  Album

6.  Cold Cave:  Love Comes Close

7.  Matt and Kim:  Grand

8.  The Little Girls:  Concepts

9.  A Place to Bury Strangers:  Exploding Head

10. Animal Collective:  Merriweather Post Pavilion

11. Sonic Youth: The Eternal (that’s right, they are easy to pass up but they still have it!)

12. Bear in Heaven:  Beast Rest Forth Mouth

13. Throw Me the Statue:  Creaturesque

14. Say Hi: Oohs & Aahs (I am a sucker for the “hook”)

15. The Wooden Birds: Magnolia

16. The Papercuts: You Can Have What You Want

17. Yo La Tengo: Popular Songs

18. Cymbals Eat Guitars: Why There Are Mountains (Bring me back to the beginning of it all)

19. Fanfarlo: Resevoir (Sound like many but sound good)

20. Julian Plenti: Julian Plenti … Is Skyscraper (Who cares what everyone else says!?!?)

Others to listen to, not that they were next in line but wanted to pint them out.  Some great songs on these albums and some bands that deserve attention:
Minor Kingdom: My Back Will Bend (any folk music fans?); Jack Penate: Everything is New (Pure Pop from the other side of the Atlantic); Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros (2 of the top 10 songs of the year off one album?); Washed Out: Life of Leisure – EP (waiting for the full length); The Mumlers (from my neck of the woods and a lot of fun)

Thanks for reading.

Banjo Or Freakout: XMAS ALBUM

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

banjo_or_freakout

As I was looking for the perfect digital stocking stuffer, I came across this little gem of a Christmas album from psychedelic daydreamer Alessio Natalizia, aka Banjo Or Freakout. Don’t let the familiar song titles fool you. This isn’t Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” or Burl Ives’ “Jingle Bells.” Like all Banjo Or Freakout material, this album was recorded on the first take, with “no second chance.” Most of these compositions were put to tape within the last couple of weeks and it is available free from the Banjo Or Freakout blog and here.  Merry Christmas!

Tracklisting:

  1. White Christmas
  2. Merry Christmas, Baby
  3. Jingle Bells
  4. Christmas Is Coming
  5. Must Be Santa
  6. Silent Night
  7. Come On Ring Those Bells
  8. Joy To The World
  9. Blue Christmas

Coachella 2010 Official Dates

Monday, December 14th, 2009

April 16, 17, and 18th (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

www.coachella.com

However, don’t expect the line-up any time soon.

They have also revamped the the camping criteria. Looks like this year it will be car camping only. Read through this thread to gather some pros and cons. http://coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34648

I am still undecided as to whether or not I’ll get a hotel room (as I have for the past five years) or not. I don’t know if this car camp factor is of benefit or not…

Happy Holidays!

Camera Obscura on They Shoot Music

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Camera Obscura perform “French Navy” for Viennese blog.

Here’s an idea for you, Capt. Start a similar blog down at the HB Pier. I’ll bet you could get city support, and all you’d really have to do is get some video equipment and talk some cool bands into coming down to play a handful of songs. Sorta Daytrotter-ish. Only better. Cos it’d be yours!

Wish list.

Hi Ho Silver Oh Big CD Release Show @ El Cid

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Hi Ho Silver Oh – Children – LA Tour 1: Griffith Park from Hi Ho Silver Oh on Vimeo.

About two months ago, I met a tall man at the Bon Iver/Megafaun show. This man called my beard tame and thus a beautiful friendship was started. Later I come to find out that this man and three others are part of Hi Ho Silver Oh. I asked them to describe their band to me in four words and they settled on: fierce, passion, Jake  and Gyllenhaal. Perfect.

On a more serious note:  Casey (the band’s frontman) made their new album “Put It All in One Place and Burn It” over the course of the past year with his own dollars and tonight it is being released to world. I hope some of you will come out to support a great group of people from the Midwest.

The show starts at 8 pm but I am planning on leaving OC/LB around 8:30. $5 cover.
