The Bob Dylan Show last night

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

This is obviously not from last night. But, I got to thinking that every band should have their own style and sound, and therfore all bands should be different, But even again, like I have said before, Bob Dylan is just so damn original. Even after hearing the songs they played last night (I saw “they” because his band still seemed to be the same, and they were all outstanding), it was still like nothing I’ve heard or experienced before. It was like there was no time frame for the music, as if it was born in that moment, and then soon gone forever.

After the first 2 songs they played last night, Maggies Farm and the Lay Lady Lay, every next song was a reinvention of itself. I’m pretty sure a few songs were from his new album “Together through life”. Surprisingly, Dylan wasn’t playing guitar, just singing and playing the harmonica, which sound very similiar if I may add. But, almost every song he played last night was 8 minutes long and had the then all of a sundden midway through some song you would hear the word, “Highway 61″-or-”how does it feel?” and then every one would get up and cheer their heads off. It was just one of those experinces that I’m sure so many people have dad on this website at shows that just transcends anything that could be put into words. Get some Dyaln albums, do the project, watch some live videos on youtube, this is a man did it with all his heart.

Concert Review: Megafaun – They Have Better Beards Than You

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

megafaun-echo-3

Megafaun make me want to move to Durham, North Carolina where I imagine my life would involve frolicking around in forests, exploring gorges and finding shady rocks to use as diving boards into hot springs.  Brothers Brad and Phil Cook, along with Joe Westerlund make music that’s best served gathered in a circle lit by the moon and campfire while you “sing to each other like friends telling stories,” as their buddies Akron/Family might say.

Capt AKAK – Traveling to Pickathon Musical Festival in Portland

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

As some of you might already know I was ask to be a photographer at the Pickathon Musical Festival in Portland, Oregon this weekend. Jody Orsborne was kind enough to invite me to be her sidekick for this indie folk festivus in forests just outside of Portland. In addition to being a photographer, we will also be interviewing many of the bands and making music videos of them in the woods. As part of our interview series Jody and I have decided that the questions should come from the fans directly, so we will be pinging people in the audience for inqueries but if you would like to ask a question please feel free to comment here. The bands at the festival include: Blitzen Trapper, Dr. Dog, John Doe and the Sadies, Vetiver, Alela Diane, Horsefeathers, Justin Townes Earle among others. Check back for videos and photos soon.

Peace and Love,
Capt AKAK

Now I understand I may be in the minority in the TSOS family in that I thoroughly enjoy attending these types of shows. But I figured I’d post this here because I feel like this is going to be an ass shaking good time. I’ll refrain from posting any live videos from these artists in fear of being lynched by the indie rock powers that be. I do suggest; however, that those interested look up videos/performances/music by Underworld, Bloody Beetroots, Chromeo, Crookers, A-Trak, and Tiga. In particular, find the performance from the Coachella Sahara tent by Bloody Beetroots and Crookers.

These types of shows aren’t your typical stand around head bobbing foot tapping shows. These also are not the “look at me being beautiful and suave in my fancy pancy outfit throwing the moves down on the club dance floor”. Its just a huge party of people getting lost in the music, sweating and moving to their hearts desire, completely oblivious to any judging eyes (I believe I witnessed something similar to this at an Akron show, unfortunately I had no idea what I was in for). Oh, and lots and lots of brain melting lasers.

So grab your glow sticks and expirience something new. Right now there are three of us with tickets already, but I am working on getting together a good sized group because things get real fun when surrounded by your loved ones. I realize this event is still some time away, so I’ll bump this in the future.

On Tour: Akron Family at the El Rey – August 29th

Life has meaning again for me. The mantra of the day most days is to live in the moment, but my philosophy is one of enjoying the moment while being excited about what the future holds. For me, having an Akron/Family concert on schedule for the near future is something that propels me through the doldrums of work. The El Rey is big step up for the psychedelic, freak folk indie rock band known as AK. If you have not been to one their epic performance I hope you will take an evening to experience a force of energy unlike any other.

Here is the closer from their last time the TSS crew ventured to see them at the Steve Allen Theater.
