Museum of Jurassic Technology – An Evening of Music and Revelry

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

This event is on Saturday and should be a lot of fun and incredibly weird. I’ll drive if anyone wants to go…I know it’s the day after a show but trust me, any event the MJT puts on is worth going to.

If you don’t know anything about the MJT Google them or look at this book: http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Wilsons-Cabinet-Wonder-Jurassic/dp/0679764895/ref=pd_bxgy_d_img_b

On Tour: Jay Reatard and The Oh Sees at the Echo

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Jay Reatard and The Oh Sees are teaming up for a pretty decent line-up at the echo. It is on a Friday night and I know you have nothing better to do in the greater OC/LA area….

To be honest, I am not that familiar with the Jay fella but Bloodclot and others rave about him (Bloodclot’s Video Pick of Jay Reatard). I have his singles album on the ipod but have not checked it out yet.
The Oh Sees on the other hand, I am quite familiar and a big fan (I placed them on my top esoteric tracks list). The Oh Sees are a San Fransisco based psychedelic/noise/garage rock band (a la Wooden Shjips except not as repetitive). Some of their albums are a bit too experimental/minimalistic for my palette; quite a feat really. Their most recent album (about a year old now) “The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In” is not only an album with a great title but is one of the few records which does not warrant skipping a track during a drive on the freeway. Some of you might remember seeing The Oh Sees open for The Dodos about a year and a half ago at a coffee shop at USC and SilverLake Lounge; the lead singer, John Dwyer, is pretty entertaining, ripping on his own simplistic guitar cords, etc.

I have six tickets at about $17 dollars a piece. I am thinking Masa beforehand for a Friday Night feast.

Hardfest LA August 8th at the Forum

Now I understand I may be in the minority in the TSOS family in that I thoroughly enjoy attending these types of shows. But I figured I’d post this here because I feel like this is going to be an ass shaking good time. I’ll refrain from posting any live videos from these artists in fear of being lynched by the indie rock powers that be. I do suggest; however, that those interested look up videos/performances/music by Underworld, Bloody Beetroots, Chromeo, Crookers, A-Trak, and Tiga. In particular, find the performance from the Coachella Sahara tent by Bloody Beetroots and Crookers.

These types of shows aren’t your typical stand around head bobbing foot tapping shows. These also are not the “look at me being beautiful and suave in my fancy pancy outfit throwing the moves down on the club dance floor”. Its just a huge party of people getting lost in the music, sweating and moving to their hearts desire, completely oblivious to any judging eyes (I believe I witnessed something similar to this at an Akron show, unfortunately I had no idea what I was in for). Oh, and lots and lots of brain melting lasers.

So grab your glow sticks and expirience something new. Right now there are three of us with tickets already, but I am working on getting together a good sized group because things get real fun when surrounded by your loved ones. I realize this event is still some time away, so I’ll bump this in the future.

On Tour: Handsome Furs @ the Echoplex – In a Bed of Dreams

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I like this band a lot and I’m going to the show. I’ve seen them live before and it was an amazing experience, mostly because I’d never seen a dude, a guitar and drum machine produce such bad-ass music.

If anyone else wants to go that’d be cool. If you haven’t heard their music before check out their first album 1st – Plague Park.

On Tour:Black Moth Super Rainbow @ the Detroit Bar – May 30th

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Electronic Psychedelia combines two very elements of genres that have nourished my musical soul for that past 10 years. While I currently listen to much less electronic/ambient music in the present years, it is always nice to have a vintage night with friends at a “local” venue. Saturday, May 30th should provide the crew with a night of magic and wonderment; I picture MRoyed appearing much like he did here.
Personally, I an really only a fan of Black Moth’s album Dandelion Gum and their blended album with Austin greats The Octopus Project which were both releases many moons ago. This show will also feature relatively new entrants to the subculta rock world The School of Seven Bells.

Net Net it is a Saturday Night and $15 dollars. I am thinking we buy tickets at the door.

Enjoy one of my favorite songs from their early album.

On Tour: Akron Family at the El Rey – August 29th

Life has meaning again for me. The mantra of the day most days is to live in the moment, but my philosophy is one of enjoying the moment while being excited about what the future holds. For me, having an Akron/Family concert on schedule for the near future is something that propels me through the doldrums of work. The El Rey is big step up for the psychedelic, freak folk indie rock band known as AK. If you have not been to one their epic performance I hope you will take an evening to experience a force of energy unlike any other.

Here is the closer from their last time the TSS crew ventured to see them at the Steve Allen Theater.

On Tour: Dinosaur Jr. at the Troubadour

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Here is a review of live from December 2007: “Combined with the physical playing of bassist Lou Barlow and the frenetic pounding of drummer Murph, Dinosaur Jr.’s formidable noise obliterates the vocals in concert. Fortunately, it’s not the words that exert most of the band’s power.
In its best moments, the band executes impressive dynamic shifts, such as the way the noise subsided to leave space for the singing in “Been There All the Time,” another of the new songs. That one also revealed another side of the band’s appeal: surprising melodic twists that elevate the music above its sheer muscle.” [Orlando Sentinel]

Personally, I have only seen J. Mascus (the band’s guitarist) play as a solo artist for his side project J. Mascus and the Fog. He absolutely rips on guitar. But my brother, FerrisSC, saw Dinosaur Jr. play about a year ago in Texas, stating that one of his friends was so overwhelmed by the sound that he fainted. Whether or not that is an embellishment, I am not going to miss this band while they are still together. Who is with me? I will buy extra tickets based on the comments section.

On Tour: DESTROYER @ Echoplex – 5/10/09

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

First heard about Destroyer from OceanRain/Stone Junkie about a year ago over dinner somewhere. About 6 months later I finally got around to listening to Trouble in Dreams. At first I was not wholly impressed, feeling that the album lacked overall connectivity within itself as well as between the music and the listener. Too caffeinated  and jumbled like an the early Talking Heads album 1977. Luckily, I did not give up on the abum as I so often mistakenly do and the album infectiously grew on me. His lyrics are a throwback to vintage David Berman and Stephen Malkmus, being quite fractured at times but the more one listens, the clear the path unfolds on their cleverness and brilliance.

Net / Net I hate the Echoplex but am willing to sacrifice my integrity for a great performer. $13 without Ticketweb fees which are typically $4.

Got three tickets:

Fool’s Gold at the Echo – Free Show

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Dinner at Masa at 9:00 then walk over to the Echo for a free show of Fool’s Gold. I saw Fool’s Gold about two months ago open for Cat Power at the Avalon; only got to see about 3 songs but they were pretty fun. Mid-to-Late Talking Heads kind of sound. Lots of Energy. Lots of People.

It is more about dinner and laughs at our favorite Chicago Deep Dish Pizza place then little bit of music at the Echo for free.
