I Remember
Monday, August 10th, 2009Don’t forget
That what’s to come hasn’t come yet
I was driving home tonight…it was somewhat late…I was tired, ready to go to sleep, driving fast, wanting to get home.
A song came on the stereo that I’d heard a hundred times before, and thought I knew what it was about, but tonight it was like a brand new song.
In some ways it was like the sky was ripped down and another sky was behind it – different colored, with new things floating around in it.
It’s hard to describe something that has nothing to do with words – but this song crystallized a way of seeing things that I’ve been gradually moving towards without knowing it. It’s like a demarcation point.
I think that’s what TSoS is about – the reality that music can point to. Or maybe not.
I can be pretty dense at times so it usually takes driving in cars at night to understand things, especially music.
Note: The YouTube video is just some guy’s homemade video, but it’s the version off the album.
Took a walk alone last night
Slept inside your head
It was raining hard again,
crawled back into bed
Tried to catch up to you
But you moved too fast
Thought about a million things
Fell asleep at last
Got up again last night
Tore all over town
Skidding tires screeching brakes
Barely make a sound
We were on a winding road
Going 65
Slid along an icy stretch, made it back alive
Little eyes are open but they don’t see very far
You can only hurt the ones you love
Not the ones you’re thinking of
Little eyes are open but they’re sinking back again
Don’t you know you’re sleeping much too long
Wake up little eyes
Moving but not gaining any ground
Climbing up the escalator as it takes you down
Last night I heard this sound
Echoed everywhere
Like a buzzing amplifier
Burning through the air
It’s still raining hard, you said
Have you any clue?
Is it ever gonna stop?
I guess that’s up to you
Little eyes are open but they don’t see very far
You can only hurt the ones you love
Not the ones you’re thinking of
Little eyes are open but they’re sinking back again
Don’t you know you’re sleeping much too long
Wake up little eyes
So when you die will you leave
Behind all the leaves
That were sewed to ourselves
With our mouths and the webs
Was it hard to retrieve
All the lines in the seeds
Do you love do you try
I don’t care it’s the sight
So let’s wash all the fear
Grow a hand in a mirror
With the lights on our skin
They say whoa never win
If you like to sew up
Then I wish you grow up
And take the lines from your face
Age so sweet, and replace
It’s the sound that I want
It’s the low belting call
It’s the science of my heart
It’s a house can we start
Well your mouth is a gun
Yeah your mouth is a gun (x7)
Here she comes dressed in white
Her mouth is filled with flames
Her skin is black, her fingers trace
The diamonds in her veins
Here she comes down from the sun
To wash this country clean
Comes down for us, down from the dust
To murder what remains
Here she comes now dressed in red
To heal this ruined race
I know somewhere, where there’s a god
He’s lying at her feet
And we’ll walk freely through the mountains and the trees
And we’ll breathe deep again where the air is pure and clean
And we will drink freely from the milk of our revenge
And we will break down the prison gates that keep you in
So please show no pity as we come up from the ground
And please remember as you kill us and cut us down
That time will not wash clean the bloody face of history
And someone will breathe here again and they will hate you for what you leave
“New Age”
Waiting for the phone to ring
Diamond necklace on my shoulder
Waiting for the phone to ring
Lipstick on my naked shoulder
It seems to be my fancy to make it with
Franky and Sue Ann
Over the bridge we go
Looking for love
Over the bridge we go
Looking for love
I’ll come running to you, hey baby if you want me
I’ll come running to you, baby if you want me
Looking at my hands today
Look to me that they’re made of ivory
I had a funny call today
Someone died and someone married
you know that it’s my fancy to make it with
Franky and Sue Ann
Over the bridge they go
Looking for love
Over the bridge we go
Looking for love
I’ll come running to you, hey baby if you want me
I’ll come running to you, baby if you want me
Something’s got a hold on me
And I don’t know what
Something’s got a hold on me
And I don’t know what
It’s the beginning of a new age
It’s the beginning of a new age
It’s new age
Candy says I’ve come to hate my body
and all that it requires in this world
Candy says I’d like to know completely
what others so discretely talk about
Candy says I hate the quiet places
that cause the smallest taste of what will be
Candy says I hate the big decisions
that cause endless revisions in my mind
I’m gonna watch the blue birds fly over my shoulder
I’m gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I’m older
What do you think I’d see
If I could walk away from me
