A Big Reason for the Existence of Indie music.

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Napster came out at, or around, 1997. This marked a completely new way for people’s acquisition of music. A way of which we are all too familiar with. A way to listen to ANY bands new, or past albums… all for FREE! Whoohooo..

To go back further in time, the only way to listen to a person(s) music was either to go see a live performance, or listen to a live radio broadcasts. This, of course, only offered a “one-time” enjoyment of one’s music. There wasn’t yet a technology which allowed for “business-minded people” to fully capitalize, or exploit the pleasure that Music provides for consumers. The creation of the record soon solved this dilemma. Finally, musicians like Duke Ellington’s Big Band’s, songs and performances could be put onto “something” and sold to the very high demanding consumer. This surely led any popular musician to quickly be picked up by some record label, like Columbia Records, who knew how much money they could reap from taking anywhere from 60-80%  of an artist’s record sales!….(Hang in there, I’ve almost made my point)

We all know that “Indie” is not really considered a genre, or at least it shouldn’t be…(yes, you may “agree to disagree”). What I am trying to say is it was not the musicians, who created “Indie”, instead it was the markets, or whatever. It was the the record labels after suffering the profit losses from things like Napster in the 90′s and beyond, who ultimately said screw signing these ”good bands” to any type of record labels because they wouldn’t make us as much money, since people could just downloading it for “free”. Instead, it is only crappy ass bands that producers knew would sell who were getting signed to big record labels; i.e. your John Mayers, Nickelbacks, Fall out Boys, ect…So, it is unfortunate, in some aspects, that a lot of the REALLY good musicians of today, can’t experience the same types of successes that other bands once had in the 60′s, 70′s and ect. All because of…well I don’t really know who is too blame. Mother Nature?

Just an opinion, by the BK Broiler.

Todo List for Tomorrow

Todo List

Anything I should know before diving into the cool waters?

Things to do in LA county before I die….

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

These are the other bands on my Things To Check Out list:

Belong, Blackjack, Deastro, El Guincho, Grouper, High Places, Horse Feathers, Love Is All, Matmos, Pattern Is Movement, The Tallest Man On Earth. Only so many hours in the day, eh.

Since Capt. AKAK took the time to post this, I scrolled through available clips of some of these hotly tipped bands (Telepathe is another one!  So many…)  and when I got to Horse Feathers, who are kinda a Fleet Foxes band, good – I started watching the Horse Feathers, the movie.  Maybe you cool kids are too young to know.  Maybe you’ve only heard of the Marx Brothers from your Grandpa and Grandma at Thanksgiving.  Now, add me to that distinguished list of old, senile persons who love and admire their comedy.

Modest Mouse, in Austin….

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I just found out today that modest mouse will be in Austin, TX, March 4th. While, I am not as excited about Modest Mouses’ current music being made today, I am still really excited about being able to see them live for the first time. Its crazy but, I remember being in 8th grade, and my brother, who is “Capt.” of this website, coming home for the first time from California. He came bearing gifts. Gifts of Music. But not just any music; music capable of changing your entire perspective on, well everything. And I was only 14 at the time! Haha. Although, I may not of fully appreciated it at the time, I was beginning my journey into the hidden realm of good music. It would have to be, Modest Mouse’s, The Lonesome Crowded West that truely made me want to find more music like THIS! From there, it was easy. Through the process of association, I was able to find so many more band who played with the same kind of passion, emotion, and energy. And because nothing good can really last forever, I will still go see my man, Isaac Brock, in person, and go fuckin’ wild if they decide to play any of their old stuff. Thanks Bro:0

Wooden Shjips w/ Autolux

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Wooden Shjips is opening for Autolux.

I can’t remember where I heard about them now but I liked them so much I sent away for one of their t-shirts. They gave me one plus a 7″ and CD-R of some tracks that were no longer available.

They also sent me a personal note saying how happy they were that I was a fan.

However, more importantly I was wearing the t-shirt one day in Pasadena when I was in a used glasses store with my girlfriend Julie (i’m writing like not everyone knows me…and yes, used glasses stores exist).

This girl and a guy walked in. They were all covered in tattoos. They seemed a little weird.

When they left everyone was freaking out because apparently it was Nicole Richie and her band-member boyfriend.

I had no idea it was them.

However, more importantly the guy who ran the used glasses store recognized my Wooden Shjips shirt and was excited that someone besides himself knew of them.

They’re psychedelic noise dance rock from San Francisco, you can check them out at:

Doug Martsch Interview

Doug Martsch

Doug Martsch

I’ve stumbled across this relatively recent interview w/ Built to Spill’s frontman Doug “Thanks Guys” Martsch.

He predicts the coming end of the mainstream record industry.

Made me feel good.
