Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros – Daytrotter Session

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Los Angeles’s own Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is continuing to explode on the collective consciousness of many indie-minded music lovers across the nation. This 12-piece bible-campers-turned-indie-folk-artists was recently in studio at a TSS favorite Daytrotter to give a live performance of some tunes off their newly release album titled “Up from Below“. Those who have had the pleasure of witnessing this band live understand that these bootlegs capture the band much more than a studio record ever could. For those of you who have not seen them live, Edward Sharpe will be back in the home land on Sept. 22nd at the El Rey. Enjoy the free mp3s.

On Tour: Built to Spill at the Galaxy Theater – August 25th 2009

Just Part of the Family

Just Part of the Family

Supposedly Built to Spill has been living in LA for the past couple of months recording their new album due out October 6th. Why they have not been playing a residency at Spaceland every Monday night is beyond me because lord knows I (and probably you) would have been there every week. But that is all in the past now, Built to Spill is scheduled to be playing a show at the newly reopened Galaxy Theater in Costa Mesa. I was shocked when I saw this but it is in fact true; Doug Martsch and team will be playing in the OC just following their Sunset Junction Street Fair performance.

Over the past three years, Built to Spill (both recorded and live) has come to mean more and more to me as time passes. I remember the first time I heard Perfect From Now On, I thought to myself good but not great. Well first impressions are often quite wrong because it is close to perfection in my estimation now. Another example, the first time I saw Built to Spill live was at the Anaheim House of Blues (shit venue fyi) when George Pants was desperately attempting to make me a believer in their sound. I just stood there during the show relatively unimpressed by this mild mannered Idahoan who chirped a sheepish “Thanks” after every song. Fast forward 4 years, I am tap-foot dancing, transfixed to their every move at a Henry Fonda show. Life is weird, sometimes you just are not ready to hear something until you are ready. My hope is that you will not be as stubborn as I once was and experience the magic yourself.
Here is a gift from the very night I realized the greatness of BTS live. Enjoy the appetizer prior to the main course.

Let’s Have Some Discussion

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Camus said there is only one serious philosophical question, which is whether or not to commit suicide.

We now have another question to consider: should a person download the Grizzly Bear leak or not?

It’s an interesting question, the guy from Grizzly Bear doesn’t seem to care much beyond the fact that it sounds crappy (it does).

Daytrotter Session: The Dodos Download

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Not sure how many here are familiar with Daytrotter.com, but it a great site with live sessions from many of my personal favorites. I have referenced them before when they had an Akron/Family bootleg (I know, shocking…). This chicago site is a great source for discovery of new music and also has original woodstock-esque artwork of all the musicians who pass through. Check it out.

Today I stumbled upon a couple of great downloads from the site, some of which I will share with you here now. FYI You will need to register with them if you have not done so yet.

Live – In Studio Downloads:

The Dodos – Its That Time Again
The Dodos – Jody
The Dodos – Paint the Rust
The Dodos – Undeclared

I have not seen The Dodos live in awhile and the last time was at the horrid Echoplex. I miss them.

Akron/Family Bootleg – Live in Utrecht, Netherlands 04.14.2006

Friday, March 27th, 2009

You might be tired of AK by now, but in case you are not I found this bootleg on another website. Since then I have re-spliced the nodes and created an album cover and tagged the songs appropriately. It is now in mp3 format.

There is a song on here that I have never heard before called “Small Shapes”. Additionally Akron plays a Seth Olinsky song from the Best of Seth album titled “Ali, Ali”. It is a beautiful love ballad about that moment when you see a young woman across the way and are set in a momentary trance.

Track List:

 3. Running, Returning
 4. Small Shapes
 5. Blessing Force
 6. Ali, Ali

Asobi Seksu – Free Download

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

My good British friend named Brain at work shared this URL with me today. He is a member of this site but has issues with perfectionism; subsequently, rendering him unable to post a comment or post. Therefore, I shall share his link with you all.

Asobi Seksu – Me and Mary from their new album Hush

Asobi Seksu is the purest form of “shoegazer” that I know still releasing albums today (My Bloody Valentine does not count because their album has been pending for 7 years).

Enjoy.

Deerhunter – On Platts Eyott Island [2008]

Friday, December 26th, 2008

http://www.mediafire.com/?ycizmozijnn

“Only 200 limited edition cassettes were made of the session (100 in orange, 100 in pink). The orange versions were given away free to the audience at Deerhunter’s Halloween show in their home town of Atlanta, Georgia last week. The pink versions will be given away on the 4AD site. This is the only way anyone will be able to get hold of physical versions of this session.

This session was recorded during the evening of the 15th of September at Studio Plateaux, a DIY studio nestled on the Platts Eyott island – a nature reserve with the western end designated as Green Belt – on the Thames, London.

The idea behind the session was in memory of John Peel and his famous Radio 1 sessions. The studio equipment is a rare collection of vintage Ribbon microphones, pre-amps tape machines and effects, all researched over many years and sourced from around the world.

Bradford Cox recorded songs “like a continuous stream of consciousness; the session is intended to be listened to in order and uninterrupted.” Kristian Craig Robinson (Capitol K) produced and engineered the session, while Bradford reworked several songs from Microcastle, a new version of ‘Spring Hall Convert’ from Cryptograms and a couple of unreleased songs.”

I hope you don’t mind me jumping on this post JP. I just found this vid from Microcastle as well.
