NY All Tommorow’s Parties Music Festival – Sept 11-13

20090911-atpnyc_670x0

ATP has a special place in my heart as it is the first concert I went to after leaving the world of electronic music in Texas and moving to California. Five years ago, this festival was being held in Long Beach at the Queen Mary, playing host to such bands as Modest Mouse, The Shins, Built to Spill, Elliott Smith, Mission of Burma, Mars Volta, Minutemen Duo, Lungfish, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and many others.  The group that is now TSS was smaller and largely made up of different faces back then but the essence was the same; people coming together over a common thread of passion for the positive vibration force that is music. While thinking about these early days of pre-TSS  existence, I sifted through some old shoe-boxes for photos of the crew. Check out these memories.

Sadly after 4 years in Southern California ATP has moved their festivals to the East Coast. Despite the distance, George Pants and I have decided the lineup this year is too grand to pass up. Saturday alone will include a back to back lineup of Sufjan Stevens, Atlas Sound, Akron Family, Shellac, Deerhunter, Animal Collective. The 70s art rock band, Suicide is going to be playing their original EP on Friday and Deerhoof and Boredoms will be in act on Sunday. The venue is in upstate New York at a country club/resort about 10 miles from where the original Woodstock happened 50 year ago. For those of you who are not familiar with religious history, know that about 12 major religous movements all had their origins in upstate New York. Consequently, with the combination of my current Jesus beard, the vortex of spiritual juju and the musical energy could very well give birth to a new age religion based solely on music. Who knows? stranger things have happened. Bottom line, I feel excited about this adventure starting on Thursday, George and I will hopefully meet some people who share our passion. Anyone who might want to join us is welcome to stay at the hotel room in Montecello. Tickets to fly out of Long Beach to New York were only $120 each way for us.
