Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs set to release Sept. 8th, 2009

ylt-popular-songs

I enjoy a fresh new, exciting band as much as the next LA hipster, but it hard not to stay firmly rooted in the heritage through which our musical branches are so derived. Old faithful is back (with avengance apparently); none other than the white trio with a spanish name Yo La Tengo. Even though I did not grow up listening to their albums, I do feel that it is the music of my youth. A life filled with excitement, frustration, passion, and love (my real childhood did not really have any of these but it sounds better) during a time where we are free to explore our creativity without judgment. I have lost count as to how many albums YLT has produced but it is probably upwards of 12. So far Ride the Tiger is the only one which I have not enjoyed.

The forthcoming album is rumored to contain new sounds “that could be the bravest musical statement to date” with a “stylistic range that is startling”. That my friends are bold statements, but anyone who heard their last album, I am not afraid of you, and I will beat your ass, knows that as YLT has aged they have been more willing to experiment with new sounds/genres. This is somewhat counter intuitive, but who really give a fuck because the end result is typically greatness.

In honor of this announcement and the name of the new album itself, I say we all state our favorite album and song. Mine would be I can hear the heart beating as one and song would be  Sudden Organ.

This means they will be on tour soon as well……..screw the present moment, live in the future. Namaste.

Sample song off the new album: “Periodically Double or Triple”

“but who really gives a fuck because the end result is typically greatness.”
I am going to do everything I can to incorporate that phrase into daily use. Seriously though, it is like the ultimate fortune cookie.

I put Yo La Tengo into my musical quiver some years ago. I don’t remember how I came across them or what made me interested in them, but I gave them some listen. It was either capt, jp, or bruce that once said (in regards to MBV) “at that time in my life, I was just not able to hear it”…or something along those lines. Anyways, that is how YLT was for me then, I was just not ready. Not too long ago I had my ipod on play all-shuffle, and about halfway through a certain song I found myself completely wrapped up and heavily caught up in the moment with a song of which I had no idea who or what it was. I decided to ride the song out and completely enjoy the whole track before I looked to see who it was.
    bam
It was The Story of Yo La Tengo. I thought of JP at that moment and simply said “no wonder…”

Tiny little Matador records somehow managed to claim both Yo La Tengo and Pavement among their list of 20 or so artists in the early 90′s. Guess which one Matador affectionately referred to as “The Greatest Band on Earth”?

From A Motel 6 is my fav YLT track. Subject to change.

You’re not counting Condo Fucks lp, Captain? I would, it’s terrific.

The Story of YLT. That’s the 3 disc greatest hits complilation? I’ve got that…and actually I don’t like it. I dunno why, I just don’t. I like their albums waaay better.

PS. I really loved that improv show we saw. Remember how Ira was totally diggin’ on the dude in the back yelling out questions…that guy was cool. ;)

hahahahaha. What was the question you ask again? Where were you when you first heard yourself on the radio…..

I love I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One. It seems to be a family member by this point; there for me in thick and thin. For this post though, I’m going to go for The Hour Grows Late on Electr-O-Pura. What a brilliant album. I think it raised my IQ by 32 points when I first heard it. It took me into another asthenosphere… There are times too, when Fakebook takes me away to a special place. (Speeding Motorcycle and Emulsified).

  7. idwind Idwind Says:

This is my buddy’s favorite band. He gets all their set lists off the drum kit, etc. He once wrote them a three page letter, sent it in the mail, and got a full letter back from them two days later!!!!! True story…

  8. Capt. AKAK Capt AKAK Says:

Is the “your buddy” really you?

  9. idwind Idwind Says:

    Not this time buddy…
