My Bloody Valentine – El Rey
God bless Golden Voice. MBV is doing a pre-coachella show (for those too busy/lazy/scared/not interested/-$ to attend Coach with the capt and I) this Thursday at El Rey. Apparently Throbbing Gristle is doing the same thing as MBV at the Ricardo Montalban, but I think one TG show a year is enough for me.
Capt and I are working on the tickets, but be sure to voice up if you are interested.

Sadly they do come out to $49 a piece with ticketmaster charges.

I don’t think MBV could possibly translate to an outdoor venue. I would love to go Thurs but if ticket situation is sticky I’d be pretty cool seeing Los Camps! at Detroit Bar instead.

Re DharmaBum. Hehe. Yeah, almost just like The Smiths. Nah, I kid. Here, you need the full diagram:

“On 25 April [1990], My Bloody Valentine began a short tour of the UK and Ireland. Noel Thompson was hired to mix the sound, and was immediately struck by the Valentines’ attritional attitude towards their audience. ‘They were like: “It’s got to be really loud,”‘ he says. ‘All right, fair enough. I got this big Nexo sound system, very powerful. But we sort of fell out a bit because they wanted people throwing up or something. They wanted the audience to be in pain. That’s what they were into.’
All the members of My Bloody Valentine wore earplugs onstage, and [Kevin] Shields recommended the audience do the same. For My Bloody Valentine’s shows in February 1989, Shields had stationed [Creation Records owner Alan] McGee at the mixing desk to make sure that the sound engineer didn’t reduce the volume when no one was looking. McGee had had a whale of a time. ‘I seem to remember I used to blow people’s eardrums out or blow the PA up,’ he says. ‘Kevin was crazy enough to let me do it.’
When Shields was asked by an NME writer in 1990 why My Bloody Valentine felt the need to play at such ear-splitting volume, he replied: ‘[It's] because we know that once you get above one hundred decibels, that causes a physical change in people. Endorphins get released into the system because the body can sense imminent danger.’”
- Excerpt from The Creation Records Story: My Magpie Eyes are Hungry For the Prize, by David Cavanagh (2000).
I’m a first timer, and I couldn’t be more excited about a show. BTW, does Bose make ear plugs…?

Okay everyone. 6 tickets purchased at a ridiculous price of $49 dollars ($11 to Ticketmaster).

Bruce, “I don’t think MBV could possibly translate to an outdoor venue.”
They are shutting down the other two outdoor stages at coachella during the MBV set. Something tells me they are going to at least put forth a worthy effort. Something tells me they might pull it off. But I guess we’ll know for sure after this Thursday/Sunday

Just read this at another site in the comments section:
“Believe it or not…. Last night (Oct 2, 2008) I was there with about 5 friends… during the last song I heard a crazy loud crash. I looked to see what happened, a light bulb fell out of the ceiling and nailed my friends head. He was treated by paramedics and the fire department showed up!”
