TSS Compilation : Volume III – Grumpy Old Men

Unfortunately, March’s compilation got pushed back until April, but I do believe this is a case of better late than never. With the release of last month’s CD, there was a bit of push back from some of the “old-timers” who frequent this site. The events that transpired ultimately formed the idea for March’s theme. I know that there was a lot music before I was born in 1983, the problem is that I have not listened to most of it. I know I need to but where do I find the time and where can I go to get a sample bag? Solution. Ask a couple of forty-somethings to give us what they were listening to while ditching class in high school. So download and take a little trip to the past when marijuana was called “rope” and Michael J Fox was the greatest thing since Lassie.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their tracks to make this collaboration possible.

    rope?
    dude, it was always pot.
i’ve got this downloading for after work. i can’t wait!

  3. Capt. AKAK Capt. AKAK Says:

Rope was a throwback from my dad who used to talk about “smokin’ rope” with his senior year English teacher during study group.

  4. Hemoroyed Hemoroyed Says:

Ha I actually thought that maybe it was a typo for “dope”

  5. Capt. AKAK Capt. AKAK Says:

I forgot how good that Iggy song was/is.

At work, so I dunno what Bobby picked outta mine (I gave him 9 and wanted to give him 109–eek!) but I’m so glad he kept Poison Arrow. I love the part where chick says, “I care enough to know I could never love you.” OUCH!!

  7. laura Says:

re rope: haha, i’m old enough to be your mother! (atleast)

  8. laura Says:

good stuff… my favortie Neil Young song for sure. i didn’t go back very far in time, but i thing it was a good result anyway.

so what does everybody think of the Boo Radleys?

  9. Stone Junkie oceanRain Says:

Re Laura. You must be responsible for Luna. I was gonna let G500 slide, but Luna is deffo a 90s band. Bobby was 10 when this record came out so he has no excuse not to know Dean Wareham–damn kids! I like the Luna album that came out after Lunapark, whatever it’s called. Still, not a patch on G500.

The Boo Radleys track surprised me, cos they were billed to open for Pixies and the band I saw and the song I heard last night don’t match at all. Wasn’t BR live show fronted by fat black chick? (Yes, I mighta been using drugs back then. Meh.) Anyway, what do you recommend I download first? I liked track.

  10. Capt. AKAK Capt. AKAK Says:

Re: Ocean, I am sure you meant to say “buy”, not download. Meh.
As for me with Dean Wareham, we all need to understand that my adolescence stage solely involved listening to tribal electronic house music….wierd i know, but such is life.

  11. laura Says:

yeah, all the spacey 4AD type stuff is mine too. man, the Cocteau Twins were so good.
(25 was a really good age. enjoy it while you’ve got it captain.)

definitely “Everything’s Alright Forever” by the Boo Radleys. it’s actually up and seeding on Demonoid at this very moment. (APE file.) “Giant Steps” is with it, as FLAC.
there were a couple EPs around that time that were awesome. my CD collection seems to have scattered itself around the house so i can’t name ‘em right now.
i dunno about any woman ever fronting the band. doesn’t sound right though.

so do/did you like or not like Galaxie 500, oceanrain? Dean Wareham is great. i first saw G500 in the very early 90′s and he’s still great live. great guy too. i gave him a a couple super tasty cuts of ‘rope’ to-go the last time i saw him. he and wife/bandmate Britta Phillips are the hottest couple in New York. Dean tends to be available after shows cuz all the boys are chasing Britta. they’re doing a show with Spectum/Sonic Boom soon. (Spectrum opened for some MVB shows it seems.)

btw, i guess this whole Grumpy Old Men thing makes me Ann-Margaret, right?

  12. Stone Junkie oceanRain Says:

<3 G500. Re. Dean Wareham. From what little I know of G500 break-up it was because Damon and Naomi say he’s a dickhead to work with. Doesn’t mean he isn’t great at cocktail parties: I’m envious of your social network, L.

So here’s tonight’s download list–if it’s available on eMusic I’ll pay for it, OK Capt: Doves Kingdom of Rust (talk is positive around this but it’s Doves, how good can it be?), Horrors (ditto), 50 ft Wave (if you don’t know Throwing Muses’ Kristen Hersch–you should: she’s fucking awesome.) and Everything Alright Forever (ta Laura).

What’s on everybody’s “lately” list of new stuff?

  13. laura Says:

it’s not like i’ve got his phone number or anything!

i’ll have to think about the new(ish) list. nothing’s come close to my recent rediscovery of the Sea and Cake.

  14. laura Says:

when i said Dean & Britta are hot, i meant they’re hot.

(pasty is okay in the northeast)
